The departure of Corey Harawira-Naera to the Bulldogs and injury
in Viliame Kikau during the trials has left the Panthers light on their edge
ahead of their round one clash with Parramatta.
Winterstein, whom has played 41 games for the Sea Eagles
across three seasons after debuting for Canterbury in 2008, was released from his
Manly contract on Tuesday morning.
He was quick to join the Panthers for the squad’s entire
field session before finishing up learning drills with the reserve grade side,
alongside players Malakai Watene-Zelezniak, Tim Grant and Jarome Luai.
Penrith are yet to officially announce signing the 32-year-old but it is highly likely that Winterstein will claim the number 30 spot in the Panthers’ roster.
When spoken to on Monday, James Tamou said “It’s hard to
understand a player like Frank’s calibre.”
“He’s a big man. I remember taking it off the kick-off once
and getting pumped by him so it’s one less person I have to worry about. That’s
rugby league.”
