In what has been a whirlwind few months for Ben Barba, his
NRL lifeline has been cut following an off-field incident resulting in being
sacked.
Ben Barba aimed to make his return to the NRL after he was
offered a one-year contract by the North Queensland Cowboys, following an
impressive stint at St Helens’ in the English Super League.
Barba returned to Cowboys pre-season training in late 2018
and was looking at an impressive 2019 season.
However, before Barba got a chance to take the field, he was
sacked by the Cowboys in late January following an off-field incident.
The incident was believed to be related to an incident at
the Townville casino, and CCTV footage was reviewed by the NRL Integrity unit, NRL
CEO Todd Greenburg announced Barba had been issued with a life-time ban.
The Cowboys issued a brief statement that said Barba’s
contract was terminated after he significantly breached the terms of his
contract.
“When a player joins the North Queensland Cowboys he agrees
to abide by the terms of the contract.” Cowboys chairman Laurence Lancini stated.
“After an internal investigation, it has been determined
that this player has acted in contradiction to both the terms and the spirit of
that agreement.”
With his immediate future unclear, Barba is reportedly
looking to return to the Super League in a late transfer, with St Helens’ a
strong option for the player.
