Coach Trent Robinson claimed a second WCC title as the
Roosters added their fourth WWC title to the trophy cabinet, drawing level with
the Warriors for the most successful World Club Challenge campaigns.
Club debutant Brett Morris scored a first-half hat-trick as
the Chooks started their season off in from of 21,331 fans at DW Stadium.
Playing in the centres for just the third time in his
outstanding professional career, Morris crossed the try line less than three
minutes to his Roosters career.
Morris was called in to fill the shoes of Latrell Mitchell,
whom was a big part in the tricolours’ 2018 premiership campaign.
Star halfback Cooper Cronk got through the match unscathed
in his first hit-out since his heroic grand final game and the surgery
following to repair the 14cm crack in his shoulder blade.
Cronk’s left shoulder was put to the test within the first
minute as he copped hit from Wigan captain Sean O’Loughlin following a
downfield kick.
A late hit from Jared Waerea-Hargreaves on Wigan hooker Sam Powell had all 26 players
come together for a midfield melee midway through the first half.
