In their first game in a post-Billy Slater era, the Storm
showed strong potential as Slater’s replacement Jahrome Hughes scored early.

In the 2019 Premiership season opener, the 2018 runners-up
hosted Seibold’s Broncos in an electric Friday night game at AAMI Park.
Captains Darius Boyd and Cameron Smith lead their sides onto
the park in front of 16,000 fans.
The game started off with a bang, with both teams refreshed
and full of energy. However, the Broncos suffered a blow as star centre James
Roberts left the field five minutes in with a lower-back injury. He was quickly
replaced with interchange player Katoni Staggs.
By the 15 minute mark, it was clear that Seibold’s Broncos
were up for a fight, as they let in two tries, lost Roberts for the game and
were being bossed around by an extremely physical Melbourne forward pack led by
Nelson Asofa-Solomona.
At half time, the Broncos trailed by 10, and it was early in
the second half that it became evident that they were looking dead as they let
in a try for Kenny Bromwich.
A quick pair of tries from Corey Oates provided the Broncos
with their only spark of hope, that which was quickly diminished by a try to
Jesse Bromwich.
The night proved to be a good one for Melbourne as Slater’s
replacement Hughes looked to make the fullback position his own, whilst Munster
and Smith’s kicking game proved to be a great advantage for the side.
Seibold’s Broncos will have a lot to work on this week, as
their night did not pan out successfully, with Oates’ 3-minute double try being
the only real positive of the night for the squad.
Final Score: Melbourne
22 – Broncos 12
